Plaque and Tartar - the Flotsam and Jetsam of your mouth!

From the time we were children, we’ve been told to brush and floss our teeth regularly, and visit the dentist routinely. We’ve heard about nasty plaque and tartar buildup, but if one does not see the long-lasting effects tartar buildup can do, most don’t take this as seriously as they should. We’re going to introduce you to one of our guests who did just that…you’ll see the effects that 25 years of neglect and buildup had on his teeth. Beware…this is not for the faint of heart! (but may have a lasting effect on your teenager!)

Neuromuscular Dentistry

Statistically speaking, most people will experience some type of TMJ disorder and suffer from the attributing symptoms at some point in their lifetime.  In the United States alone, over ten million adults suffer from TMJ Syndrome. Symptoms can include headaches, neck and shoulder pain, jaw pain, clicking or popping in the jaw, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears).

Mexican Dentistry Gone Bad

If you do a simple Google search for “Mexican dentistry”, you will be returned over 4 million results that tout “dentistry tourism” to the same degree that one would choose a 5 Star Resort! These clinics advertise themselves as “Safe, Affordable, Superior”, “Clean, Modern, English-Speaking” or even “Best Dentist in Cancun” (work on your tan while you get your veneers?) There are nearly 400 dentists in Mexico listed on www.whatclinic.com who all promise amazing results at a fraction of the co

SLEEP APNEA

Sleep Apnea is something that dentists should screen for and we do!  While it is more prevalent in adults it can also be found in children.

Mouthrinses

Just attended a periodontal update at a local university.  The suggestions for mourthrinses were Peridex and Listerine.  Then the next subject was cancer causing agents in mouthrinses.  Alchohol in a mouthrinse is cancer causing!  So why recommend either of these since they both contain massive amounts of alcohol?  I recommend Tooth and Gum Tonic Mouthrinse - it can only be purchased at a dental office.  It is completely alcohol free.  The reason it works is because of the small molecular size of the essential oils - like eucalyptus,

Dental Implants

Dental implants have become a common solution for missing teeth.  Where bridges had been the standard of care for a missing teeth only a few years ago - now they are no longer recommended.  If you have a missing tooth your dentist should recommend an implant.  The teeth on either side of a missing tooth receive additional stress when they become the anchor teeth for a bridge.  These teeth have the luxury of standing alone when an implant is placed.

Martino TV Invisible Braces

Last week I was on the Martino TV Show with my guest patient Tim Kirkland.  Tim was wearing his invisible braces on the show.  Tom could not tell they were in his mouth until he looked very close.  Invisible braces is such a great alternative to traditional braces.  They must be worn very often  - at least 22 hours per day - but, you do have the luxury of removing them to eat, brush and floss.  Tim speaks publicly and told me that he wears them when he speaks.  He also said that he has lost 35 pounds during the time that he has been wearing them.
